Amechanism for differential frost heave and its implications for patterned-ground formation

چکیده
The genesis of some types of patterned ground, including hummocks, frost boils and sorted stone circles, has been attributed to differential frost heave (DFH). However, a theoretical model that adequately describes DFH has yet to be developed and validated. In this paper, we present a mathematical model for the initiation of DFH, and discuss how variations in physical (i.e. soil/vegetation properties) and environmental (i.e. ground/air temperatures) properties affect its occurrence and length scale. Using the Fowler and Krantz multidimensional frost-heave equations, a linear stability analysis anda quasi-steady-state real-time analysis are performed. Results indicate that the following conditions positively affect the spontaneous initiation of DFH: silty soil, smallYoung’s modulus, small non-uniform surface heat transfer or cold uniform surface temperatures, and small freezing depths. The initiating mechanism for DFH is multidimensional heat transfer within the freezing soil. Numerical integration of the linear growth rates indicates that expression of surface patterns canbecome evidenton the10^100 year time-scale.

Differential frost heave model for patterned ground formation: Corroboration with observations along a North American arctic transect
[1] Frost boils in the Arctic are a manifestation of patterned ground in the form of nonsorted circles. Active frost boils involve convection of water through the soil that can bring basic salts from depth to the surface. As such, active frost boils can mitigate acidification and thereby strongly influence the type of vegetation supported by Arctic soils. The presence or absence of active frost...
متن کاملA Generalized Secondary Frost Heave Model
A generalized model for secondary frost heave is developed based on the one-dimensional model of O'Neill and Miller. Secondary frost heave arises during freezing owing to cryostatic suction effects that can increase the upward water permeation to facilitate ice-lens growth and increased heave. Nondimensionalization and scaling are used to simplify the model equations and to identify a dimension...
متن کاملCryogenic disturbance and its impact on carbon fluxes in a subarctic heathland
Differential frost heave, alongwith the associated cryogenic disturbance that accompanies it, is an almost universal feature of arctic landscapes that potentially influences the fate of the soil carbon (C) stored in arctic soils. In this study, we quantify how gross ecosystem photosynthesis (GEP), soil respiration (Re) and the resulting net ecosystem exchange (NEE) vary in a patterned ground sy...
متن کاملCryogenesis and soil formation along a bioclimate gradient in Arctic North America
[1] In arctic tundra, cryoturbation resulting from frost heave, cracking, and other cryogenic processes produces patterned ground such as nonsorted circles, stripes, nonsorted polygons, and earth hummocks. We studied cryogenic structures and morphological properties of soils associated with patterned-ground features along a bioclimate gradient in Arctic Alaska and Canada from north (subzone A) ...
متن کاملExperimental Alteration of Vegetation on Nonsorted Circles: Effects on Cryogenic Activity and Implications for Climate Change in the Arctic
Nonsorted circles are relatively barren patterned-ground features common in most arctic tundra regions. We studied how vegetation changes on nonsorted circles might affect cryogenic processes, which is of relevance as arctic vegetation responds to climate change. Twenty-eight circles at a moist nonacidic tundra site in northern Alaska received one of four treatments: (a) vegetation removal; (b)...
